Along came a lot of foam. The goal for the house is to be reasonably environmentally responsible - which foam is not.
The whole house will be timber - plenty of embodied carbon. And the insulation will be wood fiber - same thing. But under the slab we need insulation and foam is really the only affordable option. Here the house will sit on 30" of foam. Why so much? The soil on the site is not stable for weight bearing so we would have to overexcavate and recompact structural fill. Since we needed some foam beneath the slab for insulation purposes we decided to use all geo-tech foam and forgo the structural fill.
Virginia says it looks like a great big pile of takeaway boxes. But at least it will be buried under the house for hopefully a very long time.
